456 Shanghai Cuisine: A taste of home

456 Shanghai Cuisine

Dear Food Diary:
After Happy Hour at Elevate the other day, I suddenly felt really homesick. One of the best cures for that is having a good “home cooked” meal, so I dragged my ChubbyBuddies over to 456 Shanghai Cuisine for some family style feast. There’s nothing like ChubbyMama’s cooking, but the dishes here did the job. From crab soup dumplings, Shanghainese rice cakes to drunken chicken, smoked fish and stewed pork with tofu sheets… it sorta hit home.

It’s a shorter ride to Chinatown than PVG, that’s for sure…

Curious Candy: Cynthia Rowley New York

Curios Candy by Cynthia Rowley

Dear Food Diary:
A few afternoon’s ago, while sipping cappuccino at Lady M, mysterious looking branches and giant red blossoms peaked through the window. At first I thought it was an outdoor art exhibit. But, to my surprise, this was the storybook like hidden alleyway to Cynthia Rowley’s new Upper East Side clothing shop…

… and stairs to her version of a dark and dreamy Willy Wonka fantasy. Curious Candy is geared towards kids and those at heart with an active imagination and chic style. Of course, having lot of green doesn’t hurt either since this stuff ain’t cheap.

Mariebelle NY Cocoa Bar: A date with hot chocolate

Mariebelle NY - chocolat shop 5

Dear Food Diary:
For the love of hot chocolate, Mariebelle NY is a chocoholics dream come true. Whether you have a long time boo or someone special in mind, the Cocoa Bar inside the retail store is one romantic spot. Get a cup of their thick and rich hot chocolate in different levels of intensity and flavors. Surely, every chocolate lover will find their favorite. One of the best in this city. Add some pretty French desserts, sit back and enjoy.

Afterwards, you can browse the charming store and take home a box or two of their fine chocolate.

[RECIPE]: Dessert Trucks’ Chocolate Souffle

Dear Food Diary:
It’s not too late to give your honey a sweet surprise. I’m sharing Dessert Truck’s Chocolate souffle recipe from a class I took there a while back.

Dessert truck was one of the first cool food trucks in the city. Later on they opened a shop on the LES and for a while, it was where I got my sweet fix. I was sad to find out they closed! So, here’s my way of remembering them…

Sending them much love in this season of love… those sweet treats will be missed…

ABODE POP UP: dinner at The Old Bowery Station (chef from The Taste)

The Old Bowery Station - Abode family meal pop up dinner 10

Dear Food Diary:
A couple Fridays ago, I emailed my monthly dinner buddies J, J and C to try out this new Abode Pop Up dinner. Right inside the subway entrance of the old, abandoned Bowery Station, Chefs Gregg and Sarah created their version of comfort food Abode Family Style. Tickets were purchased through Eventbrite for $75 (5 course + wine pairing). Seating was limited to 10 people per service with only 4 services a night.

Fast forward a week, while watching the first episode of  The Taste, I see non other than Gregg Drusinsky on tv! He looked so familiar and then I realized it was the Gregg, that really friendly and fun chef from the pop up! I was so excited to see him chosen for Ludo’s team. Then it all made sense. Chef, tv reality cooking show, pop up dinner… I see he’s following his mentor Ludo’s path.

Check out the dinner and find the recipe of their awesome salad below…
