[CT] LOUIS’ LUNCH: America’s First Hamburger
Dear Food Diary
As we celebrate 4th of July tomorrow, I wanted to give one of America’s favorite eats a shout out… from the very beginning, in 1900…
A simple story of one hungry man pressed for time, a luncheonette owner’s quick thinking with a beef patty in between two slices of white bread – the birth of America’s first hamburger at Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut.
Who would of thought, something so simple would become such a staple in this country… and all over the world!
The original cast iron vertical grills are awesome! And the simplicity of it all is what makes it so good. Freshly ground beef, salt, pepper and just a slice of onion.
First of all, I love the meat to bread ratio here! And that grilled onion gives great flavor, along with the juicy meat. Just cheese, tomato and onion. And no ketchup!
Not the best burger I’ve ever had, but the history and the generations that keep this traditions alive is what makes it a truly unique and satisfying bite that only sets you back $5.25.
Happy 4th of July to everyone! Happy Eating!
