M. Wells Steakhouse: Wagyu Tomahawk makes carnivores happy

m wells steakhouse

Dear Food Diary:
I’ve been obsessed with Instagram lately. While browsing through hundreds of mouth watering photos last Friday, my feed was flooded with shots of an insane wagyu tomahawk from M. Wells Steakhouse.

The steakhouse has been on my list and these photos made it top priority. (I weeped when the first M. Wells diner closed down).

At 9am, I messaged my fellow carnivore J. She teased only I would get excited about steak in the morning, but jumped on a moo wagon with me, no questions asked. J, StalkerBoy and I left LIC Sunday night as very happy carnivores.

MANGO MANGO 許留山: HK Hui Lau Shan Dessert Chain in NYC

Dear Food Diary:
Anyone with who’s been to 許留山 Hui Lau Shan in HK or any of their franchises in Asia will tell you about their amazing desserts. Specially the mango options (my favorite). Sweet, perfectly ripen mangos are almost buttery. With a dollop of coconut icy, black sticky rice and or some mango on mango action with mango puree and pudding. Very balanced and not overly sweet.

In NYC however, we’ve been seriously deprived of that. A few years ago, a short lived version of it popped up on Centre St. It has since turned into a Japanese style Maid Cafe *rolling eyes*.

But now, we’ve got Mango Mango 許留山. This famous Hong Kong dessert chain finally has a little spot in NYC. Bayard St. in Chinatown to be exact. Sweet!

YAKINIKU GEN: Carnivore Happy Hour

Yakiniku Gen

Dear Food Diary:
My ability to hold alcohol has gone down dramatically in these past years, so the words Happy Hour usually just means a glass of wine – two if I want to be wild. But a Carnivore style Happy Hour? Sign me up! This Chubby can eat her weight in red meat (the Argentinean in me is giving myself a hi-five).

Last weekend, my friend W introduced me to Yakiniku Gen’s Happy Hour at Midtown East (my old stomping ground). $2.50 sake, you bet I went crazy and got another round. Plus, lots of grilled meat, meat side dishes, ramen and more.

Now that’s what I call “happy hour”.

[ NEW ORLEANS ] Walking and exploring Nola

New Orleans - french quarters - jackson square

Dear Food Diary:
My travel itinerary is usually filled with must eats and Nola was no exception. With all the good and hearty food, I was so thankful New Orleans could be enjoyed by foot.

Satisfied my tummy and treated my eyes to great architecture and art – no better way to enjoy the city in my book.

These are my days walking and exploring in Nola.

EL COLMADO at Gotham West Market: Tapas y Vino

Dear Food Diary:
El Colmado at Gotham West Market has been on my list from the minute they posted a photo of percebes. Before their Instagram post, I had only seen these intriguing sea creatures on t.v.

Last Saturday, I was all excited, only to be told they weren’t in stock. With that, I proceeded to eat and drink my disappointment away with tapas y vino. And boy, was I glad we stayed.
