Economy Candy: Happy “Treat or Treating”!

Dear Food Diary:
My friend and I discovered Economy Candy last week, literally 2 kids in a candy store. This place is a must go for “Treat or Treating”! cuz let’s face it, we’re too old to knock on our neighbors doors tomorrow.
Pictured above is owner Jerry, the Willy Wonka of the LES, this place is so much more affordable than Dylan’s or wherever the rich upper east side peeps go, and you don’t even need to be at the tourist trap m&m store in Times Square to choose your colors, they have it too. Plus a sweet variety of Jelly Belly, high end mints like Oral Fixation, super whimsical 1950’s themed candy, gum, Baci chocolates, giant Pez and the list goes on and on…

Sunrise Bakery & Cafe: Big Fluffy Baos

Dear Food Diary:
Last Sunday afternoon, I just happen to walk by Sunrise Bakery & Cafe, hunger struck so I went in for a quick bite, Steamed chicken bao and “yun yeung” (coffee, tea and milk). I wasn’t expecting much, same usual stuff from any HK bakery was what I had in mind, BUT I was tastefully surprised by what I found.

Engeline’s: Filipino Pork-a-licious Feast

Dear Food Diary:
I’ve only had Filipino food a handful of times, so when my one and only Filipino friend (pictured above, overly ecstatic while browsing the menu, actually he was just shy about speaking his native tongue, first time we heard him) organized a feast at Engeline’s, we took out our metrocard and rushed over to Woodside, on a Monday night.

Red Hook: Adios to a Sabroso 2009 Season

Dear Food Diary:
This past Saturday, a couple friends and I braved the rain for our first and last bite of Red Hook food trucks this season. We don’t frequent Brooklyn, so this was a big trip for us, funny thing was, my friend and I got lost and when we asked for directions at the gas station, these 2 non hispanic dudes were like “you girls walking there? that’s dangerous!”… great! thanks. We ignored them and walked anyways, totally proving them wrong. This coming Halloween weekend is their LAST so if you still want to check it out, take the F train down!

EN: Zagat presents “taste of Japanese Premium Beef”

Dear Food Diary:
EN Japanese Brasserie has always been top of my list, love their asian inspired cocktails, homemade tofu, and the concept of dishes tapas style (great beef tataki, pork and uni dishes). They have one of the best miso cod in the city. So when Zagat sent an email about Taste of Japanese Premium Beef Event at EN, the carnivore in me just couldn’t resist, I knew I was in for a red meat feast, 7 courses for $85.
