Gres des Vosges and Nihilist Mints: Lunch Boys and Stinky Cheese
Dear Food Diary:
Some of my coworkers are total foodies, which makes lunch time super fun. Last week, the boys bought some Gres des Vosges from Murray’s Cheese. The most pungent thing my nose and senses ever encountered. Of course it had to be French. It’s made with pasteurized cow’s milk, traditional soft-ripened, washed rind cheese. It is carefully matured for at least 3 weeks in humid cellars, in the vineyards of the Alsace region. According to cheese aficionado Peter, they were illegal to import until last year or so, which isn’t surprising, something that pungent and powerful should be handled very very carefully. Here was my first experience:
Yuan Xiao (Chinese Lantern Festival) & Tang Yuan (Glutinous Balls in Soup)
Dear Food Diary:
On the 15th day of Chinese New Year we celebrate Yuan Xiao. In the old days, as children entertained themselves with paper lanterns of all shapes and forms, grown ups would solve riddles and puzzles, while others worked in the kitchen, preparing the glutinous rice flour to make Tang Yuan (glutinous ball in soup), meticulously filling each and everyone of these white balls.
As a chubby toddler, I looked forward to playing with Rabbit Lanterns every year. Some traditions have been lost over the years, kids don’t put down their video games for these old school kind of fun, it’s truly a shame. Bright colorful lanterns can only be seen in busy shopping areas now a days, at least in Shanghai. Thankfully the eating part has been some what conserved in each family, though most likely store bought rather than made from scratch.
Chocolats Aperitif: chocolate covered seeds and herbs for your foodie Valentine
Dear Food Diary:
If your other half is a foodie, you can surprise their taste buds this Valentine’s Day with these french Chocolat Aperitif: chocolate covered coriander seeds, fennel seeds and rosemary, a good departure from your usual heart shaped bonbons.
Isn’t the name adorable? oh, and the packaging, tres cute!
Tassimo: my own little personal barista
Dear Food Diary:
The PR folks at Tassimo sent over a complimentary Tassimo Suprema, super excited! I’m a typical single person in a typical studio apartment so any new appliance/product that makes my life easier, I’m all for it. I like waking up to coffee/tea but milk never seems to last in my fridge plus anything that takes more than 10 minutes to make it’s too complicated in my opinion, so I’ve settled for plain tea or instant coffee over the years. Secretly I’ve wished coffee shops delivered, but that’s just me and my laziness.
Now that I’ve welcomed Tassimo Suprema into my life, voila, a personal barista in my tiny little so called kitchen and hello yummy drinks in minutes!
