Aunt Else’s Aebleskiver: Sort of like a Takoyaki meets Pancake
Dear Food Diary:
I met Chad, the President of Aunt Else’s Aebleskiver at the FoodBuzz Blogger Festival last month as he demonstrated the making of Aebleskivers (Danish for apple slice). He actually got his inspiration from Japanese Takoyaki, which was the first thing that came to my mind as I watched him turn each round puffy aebleskiver skillfully (making 9 at a time). It looked like too much for a non cook like myself to handle, but he insisted I was the “perfect customer” and how with a little practice, even I could be a skilled aebleskiver maker, so a couple weeks ago, he sent me a complimentary kit to try.
Kumquat Cupcakery: Sweet things come in sweet little packages
Dear Food Diary:
The other day while wondering around, I stumbled across the sweetest little surprise near Astor’s place, A Holiday Market (at the corner of 4th St and Lafayette). Amongst the paintings, jewelry and t-shirts, there were trays of cute mini cupcakes in soft pastelish colors.
The smiling owner Keavy Landreth (who’s face is the website and postcard, very cute btw) went down a laundry list of flavors like vanilla, lavender, chocolate, peanut butter, banana, but none caught my attention, until she said the 5 letter secret code to this chubby’s tummy… B-A-C-O-N.

Maple Bacon to be exact! A thick piece of crunchy and smokey bacon, sitting on top of a sweet vanilla frosting and a moist maple cinnamon cake. Like having breakfast in one bite, all I needed was a cup of hot tea.
For $1, it was easy on my wallet and no guilt attached. Who needs a giant sized Crumbs cupcake anyways? I’m perfectly content with these mini bites. Plus you can get an assorted flavors box and enjoy the sweet variety, sort of like a cupcake buffet =)
P.S. Chubby’s RATING:

Kumquat can be found at the Brooklyn Flea Market in Dumbo. They also cater and deliver. But right now you can find them at

Montel Williams Health Master: Confessions of an INFOMERCIAL-HOLIC
Dear Food Diary:
“Call now and we’ll take one payment off”. “But wait, call in the next 15 minutes and get a free _______”. “Try it for 30 days or your money back, guaranteed”. “I’ve been using my _______ and loved the results, it really works”. “All this a $$$ value for less than $”… I could go on and on, these words just seem to have a special power over me, maybe it’s the late night and lack of sleep.
It all started back in college, when I first moved to this country. Working on projects through the night, the TV was always on to keep me company. I got a credit card without any credit history while walking around campus, all naive, I just wanted the FREE South Park t-shirt, these nice ladies had me sign on the dotted line, few weeks later, the all powerful mini plastic arrived, and the love affair for late night impulsive shopping began.
Warwick, NY: Annual AppleFest 2009
Dear Food Diary:
A couple weeks ago, we drove upstate for the Annual Apple Fest in Warwick. It was a nice afternoon, browsing along the streets filled with hundreds of vendors, and even more fellow visitors. We ate, shopped, went apple picking and did an awful wine tasting (more on that later).
