Dear Food Diary:
It seems inevitable at this point that Restaurant Week Month arrives twice a year. You know how I feel about it, but like I’ve admitted in the article, if friends want to go, I would tag along. Over the years I’ve had mixed experiences. Some were decent and others simply not worth it. Dinner with wine+tax+tip usually comes to $60+ (I wouldn’t call that a steal). As a true chocoholic, I was more than delighted to receive the invite from Scharffen Berger Chocolate makers a couple weeks ago. An evening with Elizabeth Falkner (Top Chef) and Johnny Luzzini (Former Executive Pastry Chef at Jean Georges and Daniel), showcasing their take on a classic dessert with a hands-on workshop and of course, tasting (my favorite part).

Dear Food Diary:
Shaved ice or BaoBing (in chinese) is one of my favorite treats during hot summer days. Until recent years, shaved ice was mostly found in Flushing. In chinatown my spot was UiUi, but while their toppings are super Taiwanese and traditional (which I love), the ice is too rocky in texture. Now that the city has been served proper shaved ice, I’m glad to report that I’ve finally found the perfect fluffy snow ice. Here’s the taste-off of the two shaved ices “stands”:

Not all PR events turn out to be like the last one. The US Open 2011 Food Tasting Preview for example, was the total opposite. A beautiful afternoon with food, bubbly and more, just like the invite promised. If you’re off to see the games, you’re in luck! there’s so many great food options all over, your tummy will be happy.
