Trestle on Tenth: Crispy Duck Necks. Yes, please!
Dear Food Diary:
Growing up in Buenos Aires, my parents were always in the restaurant business. Which meant free chicken and duck wings/necks by the kilos to take home (usually discarded, wings weren’t big in Argentina). ChubbyMama was all about nose-to-tail (or in this case, neck-to-tail) and on a budget, so she made them in all sorts of creative ways to keep my little palate entertained. Plus, they were fun to eat.
Trestle on Tenth wasn’t on my radar until my pal MaoMao praised their Crispy Duck Neck!
You see, they stumbled upon it on a hungry Sunday and couldn’t believe it was on the menu. Actually, I’ve never seen it on any menu either, specially non-Asian. If you have let me know! Anyways, the crispy duck necks were fantastic! And to our surprise, the rest of the dishes were up to par.
North End Grill: Ramps by Top Chef Master
Dear Food Diary:
Ramps aka wild leeks are still in season and I can’t get enough of them!
Last week, we couldn’t make it to Ramp Fest 2013, so we got a table at the North End Grill instead. Top Chef Master winner Floyd Cardoz has them on the menu 3 ways and we got them all. Grilled, on a pizza and as a gravy!
The chef tweeted me that it’ll be on the menu at least till end of this week, so hurry! If you love mom, take her to eat ramps!
LA CHURRERIA: Finally found churros like the ones in Buenos Aires
Dear Food Diary:
After Taco Tuesday at Pinche Taqueria (serious cheap eats btw), I was in the mood for something sweet. La Churreria was a block away, which was perfect. Plus, it’s been on my eats list for a while.
I’ve been accustomed to the versions of churros served in the States and wasn’t really expecting these to be different. Fried dough is good, but fried crispy dough that can take me back to my childhood breakfast moments would be totally amazing and these turned out to be just that. The churros rellenos aka filled, were the closest to the ones I grew up eating in my beloved Buenos Aires.
456 Shanghai Cuisine: A taste of home
Dear Food Diary:
After Happy Hour at Elevate the other day, I suddenly felt really homesick. One of the best cures for that is having a good “home cooked” meal, so I dragged my ChubbyBuddies over to 456 Shanghai Cuisine for some family style feast. There’s nothing like ChubbyMama’s cooking, but the dishes here did the job. From crab soup dumplings, Shanghainese rice cakes to drunken chicken, smoked fish and stewed pork with tofu sheets… it sorta hit home.
It’s a shorter ride to Chinatown than PVG, that’s for sure…
Mariebelle NY Cocoa Bar: A date with hot chocolate
Dear Food Diary:
For the love of hot chocolate, Mariebelle NY is a chocoholics dream come true. Whether you have a long time boo or someone special in mind, the Cocoa Bar inside the retail store is one romantic spot. Get a cup of their thick and rich hot chocolate in different levels of intensity and flavors. Surely, every chocolate lover will find their favorite. One of the best in this city. Add some pretty French desserts, sit back and enjoy.
Afterwards, you can browse the charming store and take home a box or two of their fine chocolate.
