Onya Noodle Shop: Fresh made udon is the difference

Dear Food Diary:
I never was a fan of udon noodle, I’ve tried to avoid this doughy and many times mushy bowl of bla for the longest time, but one slurp of Onya Noodle Shop’s udon soup, and I couldn’t fight it any longer, this stuff is great, I’m betting because it’s freshly made on the spot.

Momofuku Noodle Bar: my mama’s pork dishes are better

Dear Food Diary:
I finally made it to Momofuku Noodle Bar. What has holding me back all this time? Well, for one thing, I’m not big of “asian fusion” or whatever you call it these days. I rather go down to chinatown or ktown and get the real deal for a tiny fraction of the cost. But the main reason I put Momofuku off my list for so long, was because the first 2 times, rite before dinner, huge fights broke out with the guy I was dating, and well dinner became a big bowl of nasty words and tears. So I guess third time really is the charm.

Choux Factory: Better than Beard Papa’s

Dear Food Diary:
Seems like every time my friends and I decide to take a walk around the UN, we end up at Choux Factory. Before trying this place, like most cream puff lovers, I thought Beard Papa’s were the best ever (both japanese). But once I took a bite into these puffy, buttery balls of sweetness, I was converted, and there was no turning back.

53rd & 6th Halal: For dinner and lunch

Dear Food Diary:

Last night we had a girls night out. It was a Recession Proof Night. Started off at the Hottest Woman of Comedy show ($4 tix). I can’t remember any of their names, but they were very funny, except for the headliner Esther Ku (she was on Last Comic Standing), she was stinkier than blue cheese. Anyways that’s not the point of this blog, so I’m gonna leave it at that.
After the show, I was invited to Highbar rooftop lounge, so i brought the girls with me. Oh yes! “complimentary” drinks, us asians love free, but then again, who doesn’t. Anyways, so Cabana Brasilian Rum was sponsoring the night, let me tell ya’, it didn’t matter what they mixed it with, passion fruit, pineapple, strawberry, it just tasted bad. But it was a nice night so we sat outside and chit chatted. We got hungry around 11pm and I started to crave for the combo from 53rd and 6th Halal Cart (every night 8pm-4am. It’s perfect for late nights after drinking). 2 of my girlfriends never had it, what? Halal virgins? No way! we had to change that. 4 chicas walking 5 blocks and 3 avenues for this food cart, windy and starting to drizzle at 11:30pm. High heals, makeup looking for street meat, only in New York.

Mara’s Homemade: It’s like comfort from a southern mama

Dear Food Diary,
There’s nothing like walking into a restaurant, and feeling like your going to a friend’s for dinner. Mara greets you as you walk in the first of two very small and cozy dinning areas. Sometimes you’ll see her husband and daughter helping out and the waitresses are always super friendly and helpful.

The menu includes Cajun Style Seafood, BBQ & Southern Comfort Food. For the more adventurous, the fried gator bites are marinated in Cajun spice, crunchy and tender, if you’ve never had them, i’ll say give’em a try. It’s sorta like a cross between fish and chicken. I’m no Andrew Zimmern (host of my beloved Travel Channel’s, Bizarre Foods) when it comes to food, but I’m open to trying new things and i really love the texture and flavor of these bites.
