Nyonya: My all time favorite Malaysian

Dear Food Diary:
In honor of Malaysian week, I’m giving one of my all time favorite Malaysian places a shout out, after all, this is where my love of Malaysian flavors started. 10 years ago, when I first moved to NY, they were still at their original Grand St. location (across the street from current). Less fancy, bigger portions and a lot cheaper. Nowadays, they’ve gone the other direction, but thankfully flavors remain untarnished. Here are my 3 all time must order dishes:

Vinegar Hill House: Twice in a week. Amazing Dinner and another amazing Brunch.

REVISITED November 10,2012

Dear Food Diary:
It’s always sad when you’re favorite restaurant begins to slip. Vinegar Hill use to be one of my favorite places in Brooklyn. But the last couple times I’ve been back, their main dishes seemed to have suffered from a downgrade factor. Their Country Chops got smaller and that fantastic Cast Iron Chicken that brought them fame was off the menu! What? And though food was still good, it definitely isn’t holding onto the 5 Chubby Rating I gave 2 years ago. *Sigh*

Naya Express: my office’s new lunch addiction

Dear Food Diary:
My first lunch back from vacation had to be from Naya Express, the Lebanese spot on 3rd ave. Before Naya, I’ve never had Lebanese food and now my co-workers and I are addicted. We eat it at least twice a week, not counting late night dinners if we work late. Yes, I’ll admit it, my name is Chubby and I’m a Naya-holic.

Da Jiang Nan Bei: My favorite Shanghainese place

Dear Food Diary:
“Nong ho”! That’s hello in Shanghainese. So here’s my last post for the next couple weeks. I’ll be home to my birth city of Shanghai. I’m looking forward to checking out the World Expo and of course seeing my family. There will be lots of eating, eating and more eating. I’ll bring back pics of mama’s cooking and my favorite places to eat. In the meantime, I figured I’d leave you guys with a taste of Shanghai in Flushing, Da Jiang Nan Bei.

Shilla: trying some new things in the heart of Korean Town (and some old favorites too)

Dear Food Diary:
I frequent K-town, but for some reason, I’ve stuck to a couple places over the years. So when the peeps at Shilla invited me to a tasting, my taste buds were ready to discover some new and some more familiar dishes.
