Mami PG’s Cooking: Delivering homemade Penang style lunch boxes

Dear Food Diary:
2 weeks ago, I read about Mami PG’s Cooking on Midtown Lunch. A family business run by Malaysian freelance journalist Nani Yusof Hughie. She cooks up authentic Penang dishes and delivers them lunch box style to the Malaysian deprived midtown lunch crowd. The Nasi Lemak lunch was only $7! Yes please!
ilili: share a bunch of mezza, veggies and skip the main

Dear Food Diary:
It’s unusual for me to be praising vegetables, but at ilili, they do it so well, it’s hard for me to contain my excitement. Yes! for veggies, go figure! If I were to go vegetarian, they would be to blame (ok maybe, that’s pushing it, but you get the idea). And I guess if I ate lamb, I would probably rave about it as well, like the way my ChubbyFriends have.
FRANKIES SPUNTINO: Fresh and simple lunch
Dear Food Diary:
A while back at the Frieze Art Fair, I made sure we snatched a reservation forĀ Frankies Spuntino. Amongst the brightly lit pavilion filled with art work from galleries all over the world, we also got to stimulate our senses during meal time. A fresh and simple lunch by the window. Nice and relaxing.
The items were right off the menu of their Manhattan and Brooklyn locations. Perfectly light for a hot summer day.
OSTERIA MORINI: the underrated brunch
Dear Food Diary:
Brunch is big in New York City and getting a table for 6 is never an easy job, specially on a last minute notice. My favorite places were all booked up this past Saturday so I turned to Michael White’s Osteria Morini in Soho (after all, he was behind my favorite meal in 2010 – Marea). To my surprise, the place was empty at 11:30 am, by the time we left around 1:30 pm, it got full but not crowded. After our great Italian home-style family brunch, I was convinced, this is one of the underrated brunch spots in this city.
COCORON: Cold soba noodles for a hot summer day
Dear Food Diary:
On hot days like this one, all I want is a dish of cold soba (satisfying and healthy). I usually get my soba fix at Soba Totto or Soba Nippon when I’m in Midtown, but around the LES Cocoron has my heart. The place is small, so it gets crowded quickly, but well worth the wait.
