LAUT: Malaysian & Singaporean specialties

UPDATE JAN.18.2014

laut - FIVE SPICE PORK ROLL

After spending some time in Singapore, I came home craving a lot of the dishes I had sampled.

One of them being this Five Spice Pork Roll or Ngoh Hiang – we tried different versions around Singapore, but StalkerBoy Mama’s recipe takes home the gold.

I’ve been searching for this in NYC without any luck, so imagine my joy when I found it in Laut.

Nyonya: My all time favorite Malaysian

Dear Food Diary:
In honor of Malaysian week, I’m giving one of my all time favorite Malaysian places a shout out, after all, this is where my love of Malaysian flavors started. 10 years ago, when I first moved to NY, they were still at their original Grand St. location (across the street from current). Less fancy, bigger portions and a lot cheaper. Nowadays, they’ve gone the other direction, but thankfully flavors remain untarnished. Here are my 3 all time must order dishes:

An Choi: Banh Mi n’ About Me

Dear Food Diary:
Two month ago, while waiting outside the insane lines of the Bon Appetit Pop Up Cafe, I met my first fellow blogger Jennifer (Blogging Souls), an avid traveler, cook and food lover. After her recent return from the sights and sounds of Brazil (makes me so jealous), she asked to do an interview “about me” over some “bahn mi”… get it? I know, I know, don’t worry, I’m keeping my day job.

Bayan Cafe: Filipino Food in Midtown?……. I’d rather hop on the 7 train. (CLOSED)

Dear Food Diary:
Ever since my last taste of Filipino food, I’ve been running on a pork and sizzling sisig high for weeks. Like an helpless addict, I wanted more.

Engeline’s: Filipino Pork-a-licious Feast

Dear Food Diary:
I’ve only had Filipino food a handful of times, so when my one and only Filipino friend (pictured above, overly ecstatic while browsing the menu, actually he was just shy about speaking his native tongue, first time we heard him) organized a feast at Engeline’s, we took out our metrocard and rushed over to Woodside, on a Monday night.
