Kumquat Cupcakery: Sweet things come in sweet little packages

Dear Food Diary:

The other day while wondering around, I stumbled across the sweetest little surprise near Astor’s place, A Holiday Market (at the corner of 4th St and Lafayette). Amongst the paintings, jewelry and t-shirts, there were trays of cute mini cupcakes in soft pastelish colors.
The smiling owner Keavy Landreth (who’s face is the website and postcard, very cute btw) went down a laundry list of flavors like vanilla, lavender, chocolate, peanut butter, banana, but none caught my attention, until she said the 5 letter secret code to this chubby’s tummy… B-A-C-O-N.
Maple Bacon to be exact! A thick piece of crunchy and smokey bacon, sitting on top of a sweet vanilla frosting and a moist maple cinnamon cake. Like having breakfast in one bite, all I needed was a cup of hot tea.
For $1, it was easy on my wallet and no guilt attached. Who needs a giant sized Crumbs cupcake anyways? I’m perfectly content with these mini bites. Plus you can get an assorted flavors box and enjoy the sweet variety, sort of like a cupcake buffet =)
P.S. Chubby’s RATING:
Kumquat can be found at the Brooklyn Flea Market in Dumbo. They also cater and deliver. But right now you can find them at

Stōgo: Gourmet Organic Dairy-Free Ice Cream is a NO-GO for me

Dear Food Diary:

I’m always up for trying new things, specially if it’s an icy cold, sugary goodness, aka ice cream. I’ve pass by Stogo a couple times, and made a mental note: must try. In times like these, I wished my memory had failed me. But I guess there’s a price to my curiosity, $6 in this case.

Sunrise Bakery & Cafe: Big Fluffy Baos

Dear Food Diary:
Last Sunday afternoon, I just happen to walk by Sunrise Bakery & Cafe, hunger struck so I went in for a quick bite, Steamed chicken bao and “yun yeung” (coffee, tea and milk). I wasn’t expecting much, same usual stuff from any HK bakery was what I had in mind, BUT I was tastefully surprised by what I found.

Lulu & Mooky’s: Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream

Dear Food Diary:
I was on a exciting “molecular gastronomy” adventure last week. First WD-50 (post to come) and then, stopped by Lulu & Mooky’s on Friday after a long day at work, had to work late on a Friday night! can you believe it? #$#%$%$ I was burning with rage, thankfully the liquid nitrogen ice cream cooled me down, actually that and the 40 degree weather outside.
According to the “mad scientist”, they haven’t really officially opened, so the place looks a bit messy and unfinished. He was friendly, but seemed more of an introvert, who at all times was concentrated on the “formulas” and mixing the requested “flavors” in his very cute pink mixers.

Kyotofu: Very Girly. Very Tofulicious (CLOSED)

Dear Food Diary:
Kyotofu is one of my favorite places for an all girls get together. Light bites, girly drinks and beautiful yet super yummy tofu desserts. Boys go there too, don’t get me wrong, but they’re usually dragged/arm twisted/threatened by a girlfriend. Basically everything is delicate and real purty, and boys just don’t seem to get it, which is understandable. Below is a compilation of my many visits.
