SAKAMAI: Egg on Egg on Egg

SAKAMAI

Dear Food Diary:
Right before leaving for Japan this summer, my friend J and I had a great get together over sake and Japanese style tapas at SakaMai.

Their Egg on Egg on Egg has been on my mind ever since (even after coming back from Japan). Definitely one the highlights of our meal.

Boulud Sud: Grapefruit Givre is the perfect summer dessert

Dear Food Diary:
The night before StalkerBoy left for Tokyo, we celebrated his new adventures with dinner at Boulud Sud. He originally was planning to pack, but somehow we found ourselves sans reservation, sitting at their cafe (same menu).

Way back when we first started dating, he had taken me to Daniel, we found it underwhelming. But this is Daniel’s take on Mediterranean cuisine and we figured it was worth a try.

Trestle on Tenth: Crispy Duck Necks. Yes, please!

Dear Food Diary:
Growing up in Buenos Aires, my parents were always in the restaurant business. Which meant free chicken and duck wings/necks by the kilos to take home (usually discarded, wings weren’t big in Argentina). ChubbyMama was all about nose-to-tail (or in this case, neck-to-tail) and on a budget, so she made them in all sorts of creative ways to keep my little palate entertained. Plus, they were fun to eat.

Trestle on Tenth wasn’t on my radar until my pal MaoMao praised their Crispy Duck Neck!

You see, they stumbled upon it on a hungry Sunday and couldn’t believe it was on the menu. Actually, I’ve never seen it on any menu either, specially non-Asian. If you have let me know! Anyways, the crispy duck necks were fantastic! And to our surprise, the rest of the dishes were up to par.

PULQUERIA: hidden Mexican in Chinatown

PULQUERIA apotheke, nom wah dim sum, doyer street

Dear Food Diary:
Doyer Street (Chinatown) is one of those interesting alleys that’s short but full of surprises. Nothing is what it seems.

It can be a bit shady and creepy at times, but unlike the old days, it is quite safe.

Without any signs, the hidden underground Mexican joint Pulqueria is tucked between Apotheke (speakeasy bar) and Nom Wah Tea Parlor (the oldest dim sum spot in NY). They claim to be the  first restaurant outside of Mexico to batch and serve pulque (fermented beverage made from the agave plant). Part cantina/bar, part restaurant serving plenty of drinks, tortas and tacos, Mexican street market style.

FRAUNCES TAVERN: George Washington’s drinking spot. Pot pie, booze and museum

fraunces tavern - building

Dear Food Diary:
Wall Street is a total mystery to me. Without numbered streets, I get lost at every turn (even with an iPhone). Last week, it worked to my advantage as my lack of direction led me to Fraunces Tavern. Built in 1719, it’s one of the oldest buildings in NYC. A charming corner spot that was once George’s Washington’s drinking spot and where he chose to make his final farewell.

I went in to try  their pot pie (George Washington’s favorite dish) and discovered an awesome whiskey bar, several dining areas and an museum on the 2nd floor.
