Red Hook Lobster Pound: Maine in Brooklyn (+recipes)
Dear Food Diary:
This summer I couldn’t make it to Maine for the ultimate crustacean feast, but Red Hook Lobster Pound brought it to me…well, sorta… in Brooklyn…
Live lobsters steamed to order. It’s summer eatin’ every season here, where the tables are wooden, the bibs are hanging and getting your hands dirty is a must.
indie food and wine: Dinner + Movie (or show) at Lincoln Center
Dear Food Diary:
The 50th New York Film Festival starts late September and while we feast with our eyes, we must never forget our tummies.
Indie food and wine is perfect for a nice quick or not so quick bite before or after a movie at the Film Society Lincoln Center or any show in Lincoln Center. It’s literally underneath the fancy Lincoln Ristorante – though not related in any way. On the contrary, Indie offers affordable entree options and wine by the glass. Casual and pretty chill, quick but not fast food by any means.
Sugar and Plumm: Savory & lots of sweet on the UWS
Dear Food Diary:
Upper West Side just got a sprinkle of fairy dust. It’s a little sweeter with the addition of Sugar and Plumm. This place looks like the dream of a chubby fairy godmother, seriously, just looking around makes your sugar levels go high, thankfully there’s also a full menu with non sugary items. Their pastries are by Pichet Ong (Sport Dessert Bar) and all savory comfort food dishes by chef Steven Ferdinard (soups, salads and entree choices).
It opened to some controversy, having to tone down on the “cute factor” (boooooo), but honestly I find the Planet Sushi neon sign across the street way more disruptive.
THE COUNTER: build your own custom burgers on a bun or salad bowl

Dear Food Diary:
Tourists and theater goers have it better than ever when it comes to food around Times Square. From Gyu Kaku to food stands along Broadway, there’s never been these many choices. Just for burgers alone you got Shake Shack, Five Guys and now The Counter, the gourmet burger chain where you can seriously build your burger your way (take that Burger King! take that!).
Sik Gaek: Live Octopus and Grillin’ Live Seafood
Dear Food Diary:
Sik Gaek is a place you bring all your friends, actually ONLY the adventurous ones. Drink lots of soju, preferably the one in a whole watermelon. And “party” all night to crazy loud Korean Pop. Yes, it’s a bit surreal. Specially when most of the food move, yep, all the seafood is so fresh, it’s live. I tasted their live octopus, raw for the first time…
